Zapotec Origins
Situated just a short distance from the vibrant city of Oaxaca lies Teotitlán del Valle (teoh-teet-lahn dehl vah-yeh), a place that carries the rich cultural heritage of the Zapotec civilization. Once the thriving capital during the 11th and 12th centuries, this enchanting community has become renowned worldwide for its extraordinary craftsmanship and vibrant weavings, known as "laadi" in the local Zapotec language.

The Woman Behind the Cause
Alisa Woofter is a visionary entrepreneur whose passion for different cultures was sparked during a transformative study abroad trip to Peru in her first year of college. Inspired by the remarkable traditions of indigenous weavers, Alisa embarked on a transformative journey that led her to the heart of rural Bolivia, where she lived and worked with Quechua weavers as a Peace Corps volunteer. Filled with inspiration, Alisa pursued a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies, focusing her research on women's empowerment, the concept of women's time, and the commodification of textiles.
Captivated by the vibrant culture and exquisite weavings of Teotitlán del Valle, Alisa found herself drawn to the community, where she began collaborating with local artisans and immersing herself in the artistry and techniques that make their creations so exceptional. As her connection deepened, the name "Laadi" emerged as a tribute to the Zapotec language, where it represents the essence of "weavings."
Driven by her passion and armed with a wealth of knowledge, Alisa aquired and transformed the brick-and-mortar store (previously known as Alternatives Global Marketplace) into an online platform, founding Laadi Designs with a singular focus on the weaving traditions of Teotitlán del Valle. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, as Alisa merged her passion for fair trade principles, women's empowerment, and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship into a unified vision.
