Our Story

Laadi Designs is more than just a brand; it's a journey inspired by a deep love for art, culture, and the communities that craft our world. Our story begins with a simple but powerful word, "Laadi," which translates from Zapotec to "weaving." Weaving holds a special place in our hearts, connecting us to the rich tapestry of global traditions.

Our mission is twofold: First, we're dedicated to offering ethical goods that not only make people feel good but also bring joy into their lives. Our collection encompasses a wide range, from handcrafted jewelry and home decor to exquisite clothing that embodies the essence of cultures from around the world.

Second, we're committed to empowering artisans from marginalized communities. We believe in building bridges of economic sustainability that provide these talented individuals with the means to thrive. Our aim is to create a name that not only celebrates diversity, preserves traditions, and supports fair trade and culture but also empowers women, instills confidence, and brings joy into their lives.

This transformative step embodies our dedication to crafting a brighter and more equitable future, where women not only feel empowered but also inspired to live their lives to the fullest. Join us on this inspiring journey as we celebrate diversity, preserve traditions, and craft a brighter, more equitable future. Your support is not just a purchase; it's a connection to the heart and soul of our shared world.

Our Founder's Journey

Alisa Woofter's journey is a tapestry interwoven with her deep passion for diverse cultures, the art of weaving, and conscious consumerism. It all began during her college study abroad adventure in Peru, where she was spellbound by the rich traditions of indigenous weavers. As a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Bolivia, Alisa immersed herself in the craft of weaving on an oblique frame loom, where she witnessed the profound impact of art on women's self-empowerment. This transformative experience ignited her fascination with textiles and her unwavering commitment to advancing women's economic independence.

Her academic pursuits led her to attain a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies, with a specific focus on women's self-empowerment, the concept of women's agency over their time, and the intricate dynamics of textile commodification. Alisa's path eventually led her to acquire Alternatives Global Marketplace, a longstanding fair trade establishment in Gainesville, FL, previously overseen by Laurie Wilkins. Here, she cultivated connections with the weaving traditions of Oaxaca and Teotitlán del Valle, Mexico.

Captivated by the artistry of Teotitlán del Valle's weavings, Alisa took the visionary step of establishing Laadi Designs, an online platform devoted to celebrating the weaving heritage of Teotitlán del Valle. Ultimately, she merged both organizations to create an entity that passionately celebrates diversity, traditions, and crafts a brighter, more equitable future.
